`Failed to save document' in Solidworks

`Failed to save document' in Solidworks

Kensai (Mechanical)

(OP)

about 20% of the time, documents (.sldprt ; .sldasm ; .sdldrw) `failed to save document'.

To try and resolve the problem i have tried different network permissions, from user to administrator.
Tried 4 different PCs from a 1.7 celeron to dual Xeon rig.
Tried using a differnet network cable.
Tried using openGL.
Tried using different VGA card.
Tried using different VGA card drivers.
Tried re-installing more than once (with anti-v disabled!!)
Tried making all the files read and write enabled.
After six months I am TIRED of trying, can someone please offer some help?

When you reinstalled did you use the FAQ in this forum?
Have you tired to a modify on your install?
What video card are you using?
Have you had someone try your files on someone else's machine and not one you hooked up to your area on the network? If you are getting this on all the machines then it's the files most likely and you should contact your VAR for help in determining this issue further.

Modify the installation? How?

Video card is ATI FireGL X1 with the recommened drivers.
Dual Xeon 2.8, 1024 eec ram, raid0 2 X samsung spinpoint 160GB.

We have four seats of SWs, i have successfully opened the same files on other machines with no `failed to save document' error appearing.

The VAR sent a SWs expert and a network expert.
They have no clue how to solve this prob.

Any input would be helpful.

Saving over a network is not the best practice.

Try saving your files to your hard drive and see if you still have the problem.

RE: `Failed to save document' in Solidworks

TheTick (Mechanical)

Be sure antivirus is disabled during installation of SW.This is one type of problem that can be caused by antivirus being active during install.

sorry, should have stated this at the top!

I have tried to save the sames files on my own HDD (c:\)
sometimes it saves, sometimes it don't.

Try what the others suggested, if doesn't work, here is something I tried once that worked for me. Close the file and SolidWorks, go to the directory where the file is saved, is there a copy of the file name with "~" before it? If there is, delete it. Also check to see if you are opening a backup copy, if so, open the original file. This may not fix your problem, but worth a try.

If you are the only one in your group having this problem, then it leads me to believe its either your installation of SW, or something in your hardware set-up that is the root cause. What version of SW (& SP) are you running, and on what OS and version?

In the event viewer, application log there is the message,

Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. Return value (1722).

this is happening approximatley every 15 minutes.

could this have something to do with it?

RE: `Failed to save document' in Solidworks

Kensai (Mechanical)

(OP)

my admin fixed the error 1722, and i have had no problems with fail to save!!!

(i am not holding my breath)

RE: `Failed to save document' in Solidworks

Kensai (Mechanical)

(OP)

this is one of the messages that i was getting;

The system failed to register pointer (PTR) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
with settings:

Adapter Name : {B3843889-8FB5-4612-A0C6-900FEB834B5D}
Host Name : DrawingOffice
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : headquarters.local
DNS server list :
xxx.xxx.xx.xx, xxx.xxx.xx.xx
Sent update to server : None
IP Address : xxx.xx.xxx.xx
(addresses taken out for security)

The reason that the system could not register these RRs was because of DNS server failure. This may be due to a zone transfer lock on the DNS server for the zone that your computer needs to update.

You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator. For specific error code information, see the record data displayed below.

this is the message AFTER my admin fixed the problem;

Ownership of the volume ID for C: has been successfully claimed. This volume ID is used by Distributed Link Tracking to automatically repair file links, such as Shell Shortcuts and OLE links, when for some reason those links become broken.

RE: `Failed to save document' in Solidworks

J-C (Mechanical)

And people always think that Solidworks is responsible for these errors when they crop up and that their VAR is blowing them off when they ask them to check Network, Video Drivers, etc....

Maybe if Solidworks had a better way of informing the user what the problem may be. "Failed to save" is a bit vague and caused by many things.

RE: `Failed to save document' in Solidworks

SBaugh (Mechanical)

The "Unhandled Error" messages are more vague if you ask me, and can lead to more things at being a problem, outside of SW.

Yeah, unhandled error is a catch all. Just means that an unexpected bug occured and there was no error handling routine in the code to handle it, so BAM to the desktop.

Geuss what? The usual happened `failed to save document'
It seemed to work ok all day yesterday, but this morning it don't. I had a look at the application event log;

I had the same problem last night, except my problem was my autobackup directory. I removed it and the autobackup didn't have a place to save the file, so it gave me "Failed to save Document" That isn't your issue is it, and are you sure before answering?

Scott and others,

You have all been very helpful, thank-you.
Scott I switched-off save auto recover, and i moved my backup directory to my own HDD, no effect I'm afraid.

Thing is, I have a gut feeling this is
the windows 2000 professional configuration.

Considering that my event viewer is logging wierd and wonderful error messages everyday, I reckon it's the WIN2K.
I have sent my VAR the details from my error logs, heres hoping!

Thanks again for the help.

A fresh Windows 2K install may be in order.

I agree with Jason, that it's time to format the HDD and rebuild the PC from the ground up. Might as well go to XP if your going to format it.

Just a thought.

Hi guys,

If you read the initial post you'll see that avenue has been covered.

Do you guys have win2k? If so, what permissions do you have, did you install SW yourselves?
Do you have PDM works?
Do you save over a windows network?

What about all the error logs, isn't there a strong case that the server and client computers are not properly configured?
I am ready to go out and buy an Etch-a-sketch!

RE: `Failed to save document' in Solidworks

meintsi (Mechanical)

I'll toss in a bit here, agree with either a permissions issue or some sort of network setting issue.

Last summer we got a new Win2003 server and these "Failed to save document" warnings started to appear. Back then, the workstations were running WinNT and SW2001+.

Then in October the new Dell workststions were upgraded to WinXP Pro with SW2005SP0.1 and the random errors still appear.

No rhyme or reason, very intermittant and random, and nothing in generated in the Event Viewer logs when they do occur.

Similarly, we also get a "Failed to print document error" everytime we print to the HP plotter, but if you ignore the error, the document plots anyway.

If we EVER solve this, we'll let you know.........

Remember...

meintsi,

We get the exact same error with our HP 450C plotter.I tried every setting I could think of to correct it, nothing worked.Just ignore the error and eventually it plots. For a while I thought it was a memory issue, but that doesn't seem to be the case.Just thought I'd let you know you're not alone with this.

I just had this problem on another users pc today. I changed the auto backup from a folder on the network to a local folder. It fixed the problem.

For what it's worth, the printer "errors" may be a result of using the automatically-installed drivers from Windows instead of from the printer vendor--or the other way around. So the printer has drivers capable of printing, but they are not the drivers Windows expects to use--hence the error message.

Event Type:Warning
Event Source:MRxSmb

The redirector failed to determine the connection type.

All the SW stuff was move to my HDD, and the `FAILED TO SAVE DOCUMENT' error is still happening.

The only thing that has been common all this time has been WIN2K and the error messages that i have been receiving in the event viewer.

If it is a process of elimination to find the fault then the only thing remaining that has not been changed is WIN2K.
In particular the permissions and DNS setup.

I could do with a WIN2K expert giving me some advice.

RE: `Failed to save document' in Solidworks

Kensai (Mechanical)

(OP)

End of the saga,

The solution to this problem was not found.

The facts are, we don't not operate DNS or DCHP on our WIN2K network, maybe this could be the problem.

Could it be a throughput problem, maybe,

Whatever it is, I don't care anymore, all the SW files have been transfered to my new (yes another one)PC and i have been taken off the network domain.
I have not had anymore failed to save problems since.

thanks for all the replies guys, if you ever get a solution to this, you have my congratulations!

regards
fedup SW user
