I saw a closed thread with a similar title... Time to open a new one!
So I have been getting this error a lot with a drawing document I made that contains six sheets and references 3 different assemblies. It was about 3M in size. I have since split the drawing document into 2 separate documents. One of the documents still gave me the error, however.
I had the file location open in Windows Explorer and noted the file size right after I clicked "save" and then watched it change after SW said that it "Failed to Save Document". This dialogue box is obviously lying in this case. The document was definitely saved. Other times I have been less fortunate.
Has anyone else experienced SW crying wolf?

I get that all the time. Pain in the butt! Our entire group gets it.
I have always been told its because we are working over a network with no PDM.

We only have one seat of SW. I doubt that is the entire issue. I wish that the dialogue was more descriptive! A little hard to troubleshoot an ambiguous error.
Which PDM?Workgroup or Enterprise?You will get this error more often while working across a network.We run Enterprise and if we resave after a 'failed to save' it usually saves.It wouldn't do that when I worked for a company that had Workgroup.In fact you would usually loose all of your work when you did get it.

I don't access files across a network.We are using Workgroups.
Our small group gets it all the time.Sometimes you get screwed, sometimes you get lucky.
It seems to be associated with attempts to save a document that references an assembly, or part of an assembly, that someone else has open... even if they are not changing the part, but e.g. working on a different assembly that uses the same part.
Our models have many parts, many of which are widely shared.In that way they are 'linked', and SW needs to keep track of all the links.
<conjecture> It's sort of like the old DOS 'share error' problem, on a much grander scale.I'm guessing there's a little glitch in some huge decision tree inside SW that's just not quite right, and SW's regression test routines don't beat on the system hard enough to trigger the problem. </conjecture>

Check the knowledge case some people that have had this problem has been able to turn it in and get a repair for it. This has been an issue for years now. SW can't put a finger on it and if they can't reproduce it they can't fix it. Only thing you can try to do is try to recreate the problem and RX it or send in an RX of your last session, that might help and send it to you VAR. If you don't talk to them and turn these things in they will never get fixed.
Here's a quicker way of getting out of the Failed to Save loop in multi-configuration assemblies. It's similar to flipping to each configuration, but less tedious:
1. Right click a component in the feature manager 2. Select "configure component" 3. Down in the lower left corner, there's a rebuild button with a drop down thingy next to it (technical term). Hit the drop down and select "Rebuild All Configurations". 4. When it's done, click ok to exit the dialog. 5. You should be able to now save.
For me I'm 10 for 10 for this method working and it's less time consuming than flipping to each configuration......
Thankfully, I haven't had the need or opportunity to try it, so have no idea if it actually works for all (or any) situations.

Oooh! I know exactly what you are talking about Blimey. I'll have to try that next time. That sounds like it could work. I usually get this error when there is a problem with one of the configurations that I have overlooked.

everyone gets this message, whether you're on a network or off, PDM or no PDM, 07 and 08, dont know about 09 but you probably get it there too.

It does not happen to all users so don't think its happening with everyone. I have seen this issue maybe once in the last year for myself. There are some users like uGlay that is probably seeing it more often than other people. So don't think this is just the way SW is. It is unfortunate that this can't be resolved. But for SW to resolve it you must turn it into your VAR. Believe me I want to see this fixed, because there is nothing worse than losing "X" amount of work.
I had a users that had the "can save error" on the drawingand it was due to his features and what was on the drawing,
The model had two features of a gasket, 1 relaxed and 1 the real shape of the gasket, and the drawing view was the relaxed feature and in the model the relaxed feature was suppressed, after unsuppressing it saved.

Where is the 'configure component' button? I could not find it on my right click.

There is no button for "configure component". You have to select "Configure Component" or "Configure Feature" from the drop down menu after you RMB click the part or feature in the Design Tree.

If the option is missing from the RMB menu, add it in via the Customize Menu link at the bottom.
If that works, RMB on any toolbar and select Customize > Options and then select both Show All options. This will add all options to all dropdown menus.

After changes are made to a model, a rebuild is required to update features and check for errors. There are various rebuild tools available for parts, assemblies, drawings, and sketches.
Navigating to Tools > System Options > Messages/Errors/Warnings, we can choose to have SOLIDWORKS display the errors every time when the part is rebuilt. Additionally, we can choose to prompt a message after every encountered error, stop the rebuilding process at each error or continue the complete rebuilding process.
If your session ends unexpectedly, you can recover automatically saved data the next time you start a session. You can specify the frequency for saving auto-recovery data. To specify automatic data recovery options: Click Tools > Options > Auto-Recover.
When you encounter a file that is corrupted, a dialog box asks if you want to repair the file. If you answer Yes, the software automatically copies the corrupted file and attempts to repair the copied file rather than work on the original.
