Is it really almost August? Please say it isn’t so. I’m not ready for fall, but I’m certainly ready for some fun things to do in Pennsylvania this summer. Thankfully, the Keystone state never disappoints when it comes to things to do. Philadelphia is especially rich in fun, summer-themed things to do this time of year. So, let’s get into some fun things to do in Pennsylvania in August, from experts.
August Things to Do in Pennsylvania
Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival. The Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival is taking place at Franklin Square through Sunday, August 18, this year. This is a really great event that is a spectacle for the senses. “Celebrate the Year of the Dragon among dozens of massive intricate handcrafted lanterns and installations constructed by Chinese artisans, along with live cultural performances, folk art, dumpling-making, fountain shows, festival-themed crafts, and lots of international food and drink, including sips at the popular Lotus co*cktail Garden,” the experts at VisitPhilly.com say. You have to get tickets to attend the event to ensure a spot, and the event takes place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It begins nightly at 6 p.m.
Blackstar Film Festival. This festival, now in its 13th year, will take place in Philadelphia from Aug. 1 to 4. According to the experts at Uncoveringpa.com, “All of the films in the festival are created by Black, Brown, and Indigenous People from around the world, and will offer the chance to learn unique perspectives.” Also, “the festival, which Ebony Magazine once called ‘The Black Sundance’ will feature dozens of films over four days.” On top of seeing the movies, the festival will also offer panel discussions, parties and more fun. Learn more about the Blackstar Film Festival via the official website for the event.
Centre County Grange Fair. The legendary Centre County Grange Fair will take place from Aug. 16 through 24 in Centre Hall. I was just at a local county fair and had so much fun. It’s really the quintessential summer thing to do. This event is in its 149th year and offers not only the county fair experience but also camping. Lots of people stay overnight at the fairgrounds, so it’s become an annual tradition for many in the Keystone State. Even if you don’t want to camp, you can just come to enjoy the sights, sounds, smells and great food. The festival offers concerts, local food, a craft show, various vendors, life stock and more. Learn more about the Centre County Grange Fair on their website.
Anne Erickson started her radio career shortly after graduating from Michigan State University and has worked on-air in Detroit, Flint, Toledo, Lansing and beyond. As someone who absolutely loves rock, metal and alt music, she instantly fell in love with radio and hasn’t looked back. When she’s not working, Anne makes her own music with her band, Upon Wings, and she also loves cheering on her favorite Detroit and Michigan sports teams, especially Lions and MSU football. Anne is also an award-winning journalist, and her byline has run in a variety of national publications. You can also hear her weekends on WRIF.
Fun and Affordable Staycation Ideas
Visit a Local or National Park
If you have a state or national park nearby, use your vacation time to go adventuring. Being at a local park can offer some breathtaking scenery, especially in the summer. Have a picnic out there, too. If you don’t have a state or national park close by, try a local park.
Stay at a Local Hotel, Airbnb or Bed-and-Breakfast
If you’ve driven by that new hotel for a while and wondered what it’s like inside, why not book it for a night? You don’t have to be traveling to say at a hotel, Airbnb or local bed-and-breakfast. It can make for an exciting adventure right in your backyard.
Have a Party
Using vacation time to plan a big party for friends is a good use of that time. Instead of traveling around the world, bring to world to you. Invite lots of your good friends, and spend some of the cash you would have on a vacation for your party. It’ll be the party of the year. Make that decade.
Have a Spa Day
Pamper yourself. Maybe you think having a spa day is too much of a luxury, but if you’re saving money by not taking a big trip, why not use that money for a spa day? It’s not just for ladies, either. Guys can book a spa day for a variety of services. It’ll make for a day of bliss.
